The new P-Audio X-Class X15HPA powered speakers from Cannon Sound and Light represent a significant milestone in the evolution of light-weight PA systems.

Featuring a power module that is designed and built in Australia for local conditions, longevity and reliability, and P-Audio's renowned 'Super Neo' drivers, these units set the standard for clarity, SPL (sound pressure level) and performance. The X-Class' dark grey weather-resistant polycarbonate housing and super light neodymium components ensures that it's weight is significantly less than comparable brands. Another new feature is the waterproof front grills. The cabinet has a multi trapezoidal design making it suitable as both a front-of-house cabinet and a stage monitor. Tough protective carry bags are also available. A simple interface on the rear of the speaker acknowledges that 99% of all users will have a mixer to adjust tonal balance. A level control, fully balanced XLR input and output connectors and a mic/line switch are available on the amp module itself.

The module chassis is very solid, using a minimum of 3mm thick aluminium, and features a large heatsink to ensure cool running even under adverse or continuous high power operation. The chassis is powder coated for protection.

An inbuilt limiter is frequency tailored to present the maximum possible output, while keeping distortion within sensible (inaudible) limits. The limiter has no audible artefacts, and even when used with very high input levels the system just sounds LOUD. Capable of in excess of 120dB SPL at 1 metre, these speakers should always be positioned so that members of the audience cannot stand directly in line with the system. The SPL is such that it can cause permanent hearing damage in a very short time.

Unlike most powered boxes, the X15HPA amplifier uses a 24dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley crossover for maximum performance. A carefully tailored bass filter extends response to 40Hz, and a filter network ensures that potentially damaging very low frequency programme material is kept out of the mid-bass driver. These very low bass signals can cause physical damage to the speaker, and most other competing brand systems do nothing to prevent this.
